Message in a bottle

straight away, and have been in touch ever since. Yesterday the pair,

both now 48, visited the spot at Morfa beach near Margam, South

Wales, where Rosalind found the message. Rosalind says, ‘Our

The energy crisis

Fossil fuels like oil, natural gas and coal come from plants and

animals that died millions of years ago. In the past they were very

cheap and easy to extract, but now they are running out. An alternative

to fossil fuels is nuclear energy, which comes from nuclear reactions in

radioactive materials like uranium. A small amount of uranium

produces a lot of energy, but nuclear waste remains dangerous for

thousands of years. Because of the problems with fossil fuels and

nuclear energy, scientists are doing research into renewable energy

sources, such as solar energy from the sun, hydroelectric energy from

moving water and wind energy using wind turbines. Another alternative

is biomass, which is biological material like plant or animal waste. At

the moment all the alternative energy sources have disadvantages as

well as advantages, so the energy crisis has not been solved yet.

(5) Drama " King Lear "

Act 1

1- In King Lear, why did Lear believe that it was better to stop

governing the kingdom??

King Lear is not unlike most men when they grow old. They start

thinking about death and yielding for a peaceful retirement. They would

like to have a few years of relaxation and pleasure before they get too

old to do anything but sit in a chair or lie in bed. The play is about old

age and the transition of power from one generation to the next. Lear

does not necessarily think that he is becoming unfit to govern his

country. Rather, he thinks that he can safely turn the governing power

over to those who will soon inherit it by his death anyway. His mistake

is in believing that everybody loves him. He has been a king for many

years. Everybody was afraid of him because of his status and power.

He was always the center of attention, admired and imitated. People

listened to his opinions and laughed at his jokes. He assumed his

daughters all loved him and that he could trust them to make his life

comfortable in his final years

2-" before I divide the three areas of my rule among you, which of

you loves me the most?" Comment.

When Lear first speaks, he seems like a logical and generous king. He

wants to divide his kingdom three ways and give the portions to each

of his daughters. He realizes he is getting old and feels that the time is

right to confer his kingdom to his daughters ("younger strengths")

Page 15: موقع ملزمتي - مراجعة ليلة الامتحان لغة انجليزية للصف الثالث الإعدادي الترم الاول

giving him time to relax/retire. However, he soon proves that although

he is generously giving away his kingdom, he is proud; he expects

each daughter to profess her love for him. She who professes love for

Lear most eloquently would apparently get a greater share of the

kingdom.

3- "What did he say? Call that idiot back." Comment.

Lear said these words to one of his knights. With Goneril's

encouragement, Oswald treats Lear coldly and provokes a quarrel

between the King and his daughter. She lashes out at him; in sharp

contrast to the overwhelming love she expressed when he was giving

his kingdom away. Darkness and death!

4- In King Lear, Who was Caius? "Caius," as he calls himself, first appears in Act I scene 4. Caius is

actually the disguised Duke of Kent who, having been banished in Act I

scene 1 after telling the truth to his king now disguises himself in order

to continue to serve his lord now. It is clear right from the very

beginning that Caius actually does the same as Kent did: tell the truth

to Lear. However, his disguise and identity as "a servant" seems to

make the truth and his honesty much more clearly to Lear than his

previous honesty when he was speaking as Duke of Kent.

5- Explain how her father's punishment turned out to be a blessing

for Cordelia to find the right man to marry?

The truth that Cordelia tells Lear about the depth of her love is only

rewarded by being disowned and losing all the wealth and land that

she stood to gain had she, like her sisters, exaggerated her affections

Page 16: موقع ملزمتي - مراجعة ليلة الامتحان لغة انجليزية للصف الثالث الإعدادي الترم الاول

and lied about her love for her father. As a result, Lear is very open

with Burgundy and France, the two monarchs who have come to try to

marry Cordelia. He tells them that they can have her but that she will

not receive anything from him. Burgundy, respectfully, says that on

these terms he cannot marry Cordelia.

France sees in Cordelia honesty that is more precious than all the land

and gold she could have received. It is clear that France values

Cordelia for who she really is rather than for the possessions she

would bring to a marriage. Losing her father's favor is something that

benefits Cordelia, as it helps her to find a husband that loves her and

respects her character.

6- "Royal Lear, reverse your harsh judgment on your loving

daughter." Comment.

Kent said these words to Lear. He just like Cordelia is only rewarded

with punishment for his honestly, loyalty and truthfulness. He, when he

sees how Lear responds to Cordelia after she refuses to exaggerate

and lie about her love for him as her sisters have done, tries to

remonstrate with Lear and make him take back his hasty words. When

he goes on to insist on very vocal terms that Lear has made a mistake,

Lear sees this as a challenge to his authority that is akin to treason,

and punishes Kent with banishment.

Lear therefore gives Kent five days to leave the country, saying that if

he is found in England after the sixth day, he will be punished by death.

The parallel between Kent and Cordelia is clear: both are punished for

telling the truth. The audience's impression of Lear as a man who is

unable to accept the truth is confirmed
