  • Prions, the misfolded proteins thought to cause diseases such as mad cow and Creutzfeld-Jakob disease in humans, lead to victims' brains becoming filled with tiny holes. In yeast cells, a useful model for studying how these molecules work, prions clump together in their "infectious" state, but are spread evenly throughout the cell in their normal state.
