the most basic problem of a building or town: What is it made of? What is its structure? What is its physical essence? What are the building blocks of which its space is made?

the “elements,” which seem like elementary building blocks, keep varying, and are different every time that they occur.

If the elements are different every time that they occur, evidently then, it cannot be the elements themselves which are repeating in a building or a town: these so-called elements cannot be the ultimate “atomic” constituents of scape.

We may notice first that over and above the elements, there are relationships between the elements which keep repeating too, just as the elements themselves repeat

Beyond its elements each building is defined by certain patterns of relationships among the elements.

C. Alexander, The Timeless Way of Building, Oxford University Press, 1979.

When we look closer still, we realize that even this view is still not very accurate. For it is not merely true that the relationships are attached to the elements: the fact is that the elements themselves are patterns of relationships.

And finally, the things which seem like elements dissolves, and leave a fabric of relationships behind, which is the stuff that actually repeats itself, and gives the structure to a building or a town.

At the moment when a person is faced with an act of design, he does not have time to think about it from scratch.

the only way of acting fast is to rely on the various rules of thumb which he has accumulated in his mind. In short, each one of us, no matter how humble, or how elevated, has a vast fabric of rules of thumb, in our minds, which tell us what to do when it comes time to act.

When a person is faced with an act of design, what he does is governed entirely by the pattern language which he has in his mind at that moment. Of course, the pattern languages in each mind are evolving all the time, as each person’s experience grows. But at the particular moment he has to make a design, he relies entirely on the pattern language he happens to have accumulated up until that moment.

121. Path Shape * 121.

Streets should be for staying in, and not just for moving through, the way they are today.

For centuries, the street provided city dwellers with usable public space right outside their houses. Now, in a number of subtle ways, the modern city has made streets which are for “going through,” not for “staying in.” This is reinforced by regulations which make it a crime to loiter, by the greater attractions inside the side itself, and by streets which are so unattractive to stay in, that they almost force people into their houses.

121. Path Shape * 121.

From an environmental standpoint, the essence of the problem is this: streets are “centrifugal” not “centripetal”: they drive people out instead of attracting them in. In order to combat this effect, the pedestrian world outside houses must be made into the kind of place where you stay, rather the kind of place you move through. It must, in short, be made like a kind of outside public room, with a greater sense of enclosure then a street. This can be accomplished if we make residential pedestrian streets subtly convex in plan with seats and galleries around the edges, and even sometimes roof the streets with beams or trelliswork.

Therefore:Make a bulge in the middle of public path, and make the ends narrower, so that the path forms an enclosure which is a place to stay, not just a place to pass through.

124. Activity Pockets ** 124.

The life of a public square forms naturally around its edge. If the edge fails, then the space never becomes lively.

In more detail: people gravitate naturally toward the edge of public spaces. They do not linger out in the open. If the edge does not provide them with places where it is natural to linger, the space becomes a place to walk through, not a place to stop. It is therefore clear that a public square should be surrounded by pockets of activity: shops, stands, benches, displays, rails, courts, gardens, new racks. In effect, the edge must be scalloped.

124. Activity Pockets ** 124.

Therefore:Surround public gathering places with pockets of activity --- small, partly enclosed areas at the edges, which jut forward into the open space between the paths, and contain activities which make it natural for people to pause and get involved.

30. Activity Nodes ** 30.

Community facilities scattered individually through the city do nothing for the life of the city.

Therefore:Create nodes of activity throughout the community, spread about 300 yard apart. First identify existing spots in the community where action seems to concentrate itself. Then modify the layout of the paths in the community to bring as many of them through these spots as possible. This makes each spot function as a “node” in the path network. Then, at the center of each node, make a small public square, and surround it with a combination of community facilities and shops which are mutually supportive.

18. Network of Learning * 18.

In a society which emphasizes teaching, children and students --- and adults --- become passive and unable to think or act for themselves. Creative, active individuals can only grow up in a society which emphasizes learning instead of teaching.

18. Network of Learning * 18.

Therefore:Instead of the lock-step of compulsory schooling in a fixed place, work in piecemeal ways to decentralize the process of learning and enrich it through contact with many places and people all over the city: workshops, teachers at home or walking through the city, professionals willing to take on the young as helpers, older children teaching younger children, museums, youth groups traveling scholarly seminars, industrial workshops, old people, and so on. Conceive of all these situations as forming the backbone of the learning process; survey all these situations, describe them, and publish them as the city’s “curriculum”; then let students, children, their families and neighborhoods weave together for themselves the situations that comprise their “school” paying as they go with standard vouchers, raised by community tax. Build new educational facilities in a way which extends and enriches this network.

73. Adventure Playground 73.

A castle, made of cartons, rocks, and old branches, by a group of children for themselves, is worth a thousand perfectly detailed, exactly finished castles, made for them in a factory.

Play has many functions; it gives children a chance to be together, a chance to use their bodies, to build muscles, and to test new skills. But above all, play is a function of the imagination. A child’s play is his way of dealing with the issues of his growth, of relieving tensions and exploring the future. It reflects directly the problems and joys of his social reality. Children come to terms with the world, wrestle with their pictures of it, and reform these pictures constantly, through those adventures of imagination we call play.

73. Adventure Playground 73.

Therefore:Set up a playground for the children in each neighborhood. Not a highly finished playground, with asphalt and swings, but a place with raw materials of all kinds --- nets, boxes, barrels, trees, ropes, simple tools, frames, grass, and water --- where children can create and re-create playgrounds of their own.

Any kind of playground which disturbs, or reduces, the role of imagination and makes the child more passive, more the recipient of someone else’s imagination, may look nice, may be clean, may be safe, may be health --- but it just cannot satisfy the fundamental need which play is all about. And, to put it bluntly, it is a waste of time and money. Huge abstract sculptured playlands are just as bad as asphalt playgrounds and jungle gyms. They are not just sterile; they are useless. The functions they perform have nothing to do with the child’s most basic needs. ... This need for adventurous and imaginative play is taken care of handily in small towns and in the countryside, where children have access to raw materials, space, and a somewhat comprehensible environment. In cities, however, it has become a pressing concern. The world of private toys and asphalt playgrounds does not provide the proper settings for this kind of play.

129. Common Areas at the Heart **

No social group --- whether a family, a work group, or a school group --- can survive without constant informal contact among its members.

Therefore:Create a single common area for every social group. Locate it at the center of gravity of all the spaces the group occupies, and in such a way that the paths which go in and out of the building lie target to it.

36. Degrees of Publicness ** 36.

People are different, and the way they want to place their houses in a neighborhood is one of the most basic kinds of difference.

Therefore:Make a clear distinction between three kinds of homes-those on quiet backwaters, those on busy streets, and those that are more or less in between. Make sure that those on quiet backwaters are on twisting paths, and that these houses are themselves physically secluded; make sure that the more public houses are on busy streets with many people passing by all day long and that the houses themselves are relatively exposed to the passer-by. The in-between houses may then be located on the paths half-way between the other two. Give every neighborhood about equal numbers of these three kinds of homes.

159. Light on Two Sides of Every Room **

When they have a choice, people will always gravitate to those rooms which have light on two sides, and leave the rooms which are lit only from one side unused and empty.

This pattern, perhaps more than any other single pattern, determines the success or failure of a room. The arrangement of daylight in a room, and the presence of windows on two sides, is fundamental.

Therefore:Locate each room so that it has outdoor space outside it on at least two sides, and then place windows in these outdoor walls so that natural light falls into every room from more than one direction.

139. Farmhouse Kitchen ** 139.

The isolated kitchen, separate from the family and considered as an efficient but unpleasant factory for food I as hangover from the days of servants; and the more recent days when women willingly took over the servants’ role.

The difficulties which surround the situation will only disappear, finally, when all the members of the family are able to accept, fully, the fact that taking care of themselves by cooking is as much a part of life as taking care of themselves by eating.

139. Farmhouse Kitchen ** 139.

We are convinced that the solution lies in the pattern of the old farmhouse kitchen. In the farmhouse kitchen, kitchen work and family activity were completely integrated in one big room. The family activity centered around a big table in the middle: here they ate, talked, played cards, and did work of all kinds including some of the food preparation. The kitchen work was done communally both on the table, and on counters round the walls. And there might have been a comfortable old chair in the corner where someone could sleep through the activities.

Therefore:Make the kitchen bigger than usual, big enough to include the “family room” space, and place it near the center of the commons, not so far back in the house as an ordinary kitchen. Make it large enough to hold a good big and chairs, some soft and some hard, with counters and stove and sink around the edge of the room; and make it a bright and comfortable room.
