Smart Metering

Smart Meter World Tour
Smart Metering

Implementation lessons learned highlight the need to focus on benefits and the role of business process redesign to deliver
IBM offerings and experience >> Tools and methodologies >> Smart Meter Program Implementation
Smart Metering is not COTS (commercial off the shelf) right now – applications are evolving,
standard processes are locality specific, complex integration is required for success
Business process is “product” dependent, it’s the first step in defining design requirements
(detailed functional specs, etc.) – platform independent process work will not provide
information required for systems integration
The processes are pervasive, touching almost every part of
the utility organization, and introducing new functionality
that changes how existing processes will be handled
Don’t be surprised if other “initiatives” are working on the
same processes – coordination is critical
Business process work will require considerable internal
support and input
Vendor involvement is critical when developing to-be
business processes
