COME EXPLORE CATHOLICISM

interested in learning about the Catholic faith? Do
you know someone who was baptized Catholic as an

attended religious education or Mass while growing
up? Are you a visitor, curious about what the Catholic
Church teaches? Perhaps thinking about joining the
Catholic Inquiry sessions: Every Monday beginning
at 6pm in Room 123. All are welcome to

HAVE YOU EVER THOUGHT ABOUT
BEING A CATECHIST?
St. Thomas the Apostle Parish is blessed to have an
ever-growing religious education program staffed
with well-trained and dedicated catechists. This year
we have a need for new adults to step forward and
join in this ministry for children. If you have an
interest in sharing the love of Jesus and our rich faith
tradition with children and would be willing to train
and prepare to be a catechist, substitute catechist, or
classroom helper, please contact Jill St. Yves,
email@example.com or 986-9885.
ST. VINCENT DE PAUL
The next meeting of the St. Thomas Conference will
be at 9:15 am on Friday, August 7. Please plan to
attend to learn more about the ministry, or call Curt
Sheldon at (865) 458-8510.
DIOCESAN-WIDE CONFIRMATION MASS
Are you a baptized Catholic who fell through the cracks when it came to the Sacrament of Confirmation?
Many, many adults never received the Sacrament
through no fault of their own. So many reasons: Your
family had to move in the year of your Confirmation
age; conflicts with extra-curricular activities; or
maybe you were werent emotionally or spiritually
ready as a teenager. Bishop Stika will be celebrating a
Confirmation Mass for baptized Catholics who have
never been confirmed on September 13, 2015 at
5:00pm at Sacred Heart Cathedral. If you are a
Catholic in good standing and desire to be enriched
with the gifts of the Holy Spirit, call now for an
appointment with Fr. Doug or Fr. Julian. You may be
surprised to find out how easy it will be for you to be
confirmed at last!
There will not be Daily Masses the following
Mondays: August 3, 10, and 17.
Good News from the St. Thomas
Music Ministry! The Music
Ministry is always looking for
new people to come and join
one of our choirs. The two
Sunday morning choirs rehearse on Wednesdays
(beginning on August 19) from 6:30 to 8:00. On
Sundays we meet up in the choir room about 40
minutes before each Sunday Mass (8:20 or 10:50) to
go over the music for that Mass! Our Mens Choir
rehearses the 3rd
Tuesday each month, and sings the
Saturday, 5 pm Mass. If youd like more
information, see Marla Emerson (contact info on the
front of this bulletin.) Come and join us! Youll be
glad you did!
Communion Antiphon for August:
I am the bread of life. All who eat this
bread will never die.
I am Gods love revealed. I am broken
that you might be healed.
FOOD EVENT THANK YOU!!
The Knoxville Council of Catholic Women want to
thank all St. Thomas parishioners that came out on
Saturday, July 25th
to help bag 10,152 meals for the
children in Burkina Faso, West Africa. After raising
$5,000 we set the date to complete the project.
Kevin Cooney, Youth Minister, asked his youth group
to volunteer at 10:00 am to help unload 50 lb.
Packages of food and other supplies. And boy did
they help they helped at 10 am and stayed to
complete the Stop Hunger Now project sponsored by
CRS (Catholic Relief Services). Some of the men that
volunteered to unload the truck, stood back and
watched with smiles as the youth gave their all to get
us unloaded and set up in record time. After set up,
it took the 110 volunteers from all over the diocese,
less than 2 hours to bag 10,152 meals. Each package
will serve a family of 6 in Burkina Faso. This project is
going on all over the US; go to the Stop Hunger Now
site to learn more. Again, a warm THANK YOU to all.
A Share Table will be outside the church after all
Masses for anyone who wishes to share their home
produce with others.
THE LORD HEARS THE CRY OF THE
POOR - PSALM 34
A story about faith and Gods love alive here in our
parishfrom the heart and hands of our newly-
formed Society of St. Vincent de Paul.
Through the Holy Spirit and the people of God who
have hearts to bring Gods love to the poor, a single
mother with four children is filled with gratitude to God
and the members from our Society of St. Vincent de
Paul who prayed with her and helped her avoid a
This single mother came to us with a large water bill.
She had a water leak which created a utility bill of
$648.00. She faced an imminent shut-off notice. Not
knowing where to turn, she came to the church; and St.
Thomas the Apostles Society of St. Vincent de Paul
came to her aid.
Two of our society members visited and prayed with her
at her home. Together, they prayed to the Holy Spirit
for guidance. After visiting and praying with her, the St.
Vincent de Paul team suggested an amount that she
might pay, while we would contribute the remainder of
the utility bill.
She was very hopeful that she would be able to do this
and so grateful for the prayers and presence of the
society members. During a time of mutual prayer led by
our Vincentians, she received a phone call but chose not
to answer her phone, so as not to interrupt the moment
of prayer. We later found out that this was a very
important call and an answer to that same prayer.
Our practice is to always reach
