Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, known also as Lou Gehrig’s disease, is one of the most challenging of all neurological diseases. It has confounded the scientific community for more than 160 years. Patients are robbed of their ability to chew, swallow, drink, eat, breathe, speak, walk and move. ALS has been described as “a brief life in a glass coffin.” No proven cause or cure exists at this time. Death within two to four years is, for most, inevitable. An estimated 750,000 patients across the globe, including all genders, cultures and ages, live with the disease at any given time.

Israel, a country slightly larger than Massachusetts, lies at the eastern end of the 5MLQ\MZZIVMIV�;MI��JWZLMZML�Ja�-OaX\��;aZQI��2WZLIV�IVL�4MJIVWV��<PM�[W]\PMZV�Negev region, which covers almost half of the total area, is largely a desert. The diverse population, as of January 2011, was close to 7.7 million people.

Archeology in Israel involves the systematic investigation of all the remains of the country’s past – from prehistory to the end of the Ottoman rule. The profusion of material remains as evidence of the many cultures that have left their imprint on Israel.

Much of its diversity can be attributed to the large numbers of immigrants that have arrived from throughout the world. Its physical presence has been maintained through the centuries even after the majority was forced into exile. During the many years WN �\PM�,QI[XWZI��\PM�LQ[XMZ[QWV�WN �2M_[�NZWU�1[ZIMT���\PM�2M_Q[P�XMWXTM�UIQV\IQVML�its bond with the land. With the establishment of the State of Israel in 1948, Jewish independence, originally lost 2000 years earlier, was renewed.

The Interdisciplinary Center for Neural Computation at Hebrew University is a center WN �M`KMTTMVKM�\PI\�KWUJQVM[�NIKQTQ\M[��MY]QXUMV\�IVL�M`XMZ\Q[M�I\�WVM�[Q\M�\PI\�Q[�PQOPTa�ZMOIZLML�Ja�leading brain scientists throughout the European Union. The Center hosts some 100 researchers from Europe to train them in applying a multi-disciplinary approach to understanding the functions of the brain. In Haifa, the Brain and Behavior Research Center has combined the disciplines of neurobiology and psychobiology in its work on Alzheimer’s Disease, reinforcing the belief that both disciplines are necessary for developing a cure for this disease.

Researchers at Technion and Rambam Medical Center have formed a team to create biological pacemakers from human embryonic stem cells. Ultimately, the hope is that after a major heart attack, these cells can be implanted and will restore function.

At the Weizmann Institute, a formidable research team has programmed the world’s smallest computer in a test tube so that it automatically can detect the presence of certain cancers, diagnose them and produce a drug molecule to kill the cnacer cells.

Gamida Cell Ltd. has developed a revolutionary treatment for leukemia using a stem-cell derived product. When tested on terminal leukemia patients for whom other treatments had failed, remarkable results were achieved. With conventional treatment, only 10% of the critically ill patients would have been expected to survive a benchmark of 100 days. With this new treatment, 50% of the patients were still alive at that point.

Hadassah Medical Center was founded by Hadassah, the Women’s Zionist Organization of America and continues to underwrite many programs today.

In 2005, Hadassah Medical Center was nominated for the Nobel 8MIKM�8ZQKM�QV�ZMKWOVQ\QWV�WN �Q\[�MY]IT�\ZMI\UMV\�WN �ITT�XI\QMV\[��regardless of ethnic and religious differences, and its efforts to build bridges of peace.

Tower of David, Old City, JerusalemThe name Jerusalem means ‘Abode of Peace’ in Hebrew and “The Holy Sanctuary’ in Arabic and is a holy city to the three major Abrahamic religions -- Judaism, Christianity and Islam. The oldest part of the city was settled in the 4th century BCE, making Jerusalem one of the oldest cities in the world. During its long history, Jerusalem has been destroyed twice, besieged 23 times, attacked 52 times, and captured and recaptured 44 times.

Human habitation in the area can be traced back as far as 380,000 BCE and the archaeological records support the Biblical account of David having defeated the Jebusites in a war and capturing the city intact. David made the city his capital and his son, Solomon, built the First Temple there. This event centralized religious authority and religious practice throughout the Kingdom of the Jews in Jerusalem, making the city even more important than before.

Today, Jerusalem is one of Israel’s largest cities, both in population IVL�[QbM��4WKI\ML�QV�\PM�2]LMIV�5W]V\IQV[�JM\_MMV�\PM�5MLQ\MZZIVMIV�Sea and the northern edge of the Dead Sea, modern Jerusalem has grown far beyond the boundaries of the Old City. The beauty and MVMZOa�WN �\PM�KQ\a�Q[�LQNÅK]T\�\W�LM[KZQJM�QV�_WZL[��7VM�U][\�JM�\PMZM�to experience the vitality and diversity. The deep sense of mankind’s history exists in the roads, buildings and ruins. Every direction brings with it a majestic image and a sense of hopefulness.

Early History0ILI[[IP�5MLQKIT�+MV\MZ�_I[�M[\IJTQ[PML�QV��!���QV�6M_�AWZS�+Q\a�\W�XZW^QLM�PMIT\P�care in the then Ottoman-occupied Jerusalem. Two nurses set up a small public station to provide maternity care and treat trachoma, a rampant eye disease in the Middle East. By 1921, the American Zionist Medical Unit had grown to 45 medical health XZWNM[[QWVIT[��M[\IJTQ[PML�[Q`�PW[XQ\IT[�IVL�I�V]Z[QVO�[KPWWT��?Q\PQV�I�NM_�aMIZ[��\PM�ÅZ[\�tuberculosis treatment center was established in Safed.

<PM�:W\P[KPQTL�0ILI[[IP�=VQ^MZ[Q\a�0W[XQ\IT��\PM�ÅZ[\�\MIKPQVO�PW[XQ\IT�IVL�UMLQKIT�center, opened on May 9, 1939. By March, 1947, attacks had become a common occurence, threatening medical professionals and patients. On April 13, 1948, an armored convoy of doctors, nurses, medical students, and other staff was ambushed, killing 78 people in what is known as the Hadassah Medical Convoy Massacre. Under the 1949 armistice agreement with Jordan, Mount Scopus was declared a demilitarized enclave and operation of the hospital became impossible. The staff moved to temporary Y]IZ\MZ[�QV�2MZ][ITMU�IVL�M^MV\]ITTa�I�VM_�KIUX][�_I[�J]QT\�QV�-QV�3MZMU��)N\MZ�\PM�]VQÅKI\QWV�WN �2MZ][ITMU�QV�\PM�;Q`�,Ia�?IZ��0ILI[[IP�5W]V\�;KWX][�]VLMZ_MV\�extensive renovations, reopening in 1975. With over 300 beds and 30 departments and clinics, the hospital serves all populations in Jerusalem without distinction.

In 1961, a new medical complex was built in Ein Kerem in southwest Jerusalem supported with funding from Hadassah Women’s Zionist Organization of America. Today the hospital accommodates 700 beds, contains 130 departments and clinics in 22 buildings and includes the Hebrew University of Jerusalem schools of medicine, dentistry, nursing, public health, and pharmacology, as well as many modern research laboratories.

The campus synagogue is famous for its stained glass windows depicting the twelve tribes of Israel, created and donated in 1960 by Marc Chagall.

Dr. Slavin believes this approach will rescue dying neurons and/or prevent neuronal death. Adult stem cells taken from bone marrow and fat from adipose tissue can differentiate into neurons. These mesenchymal stromal cells are then injected into the lower lumbar region intrathecally and infused intravenously. Dr. Slavin states that one million mesenchymal stromal cells are injected intrathecally in the lumbar region, and 2-3 million cells are infused intravenously. Israel’s Commitment to ALS*MKI][M�_M�JMTQM^ML�\PI\�\PM�1[ZIMTQ�UMLQKIT�[KQMV\QÅK�community, while involved in ground breaking research, PIL�aM\�\W�\ISM�Q\[�XTIKM�I\�\PM�NWZMNZWV\�WN �)4;�[\MU�cell research, we spent May and June 2011 in Israel. We met with major researchers and institutions including BrainStorm Cell Therapeutics in Petach Tikva, Hebrew University, Hadassah Hospital in Jerusalem, Tel Aviv University and many others. Our investigation included on-site review of facilities and evaluation of published data.

We traveled the length and breadth of Israel in search of answers. What we found were committed, energetic and brilliant individuals, dedicated to their research and willing to share information.

We continue to analyze nearly 50 of these clusters \PI\�UIa�PWTL�KT]M[�I[�\W�\PM�WZQOQV[�WN �)4;��?M�ZMKMV\Ta�began collaborative efforts with Dr. Paul Alan Cox, Director of the Institute for EthnoMedicine, to more fully explore these dynamics and to bring together those researchers most IK\Q^M�QV�\PQ[�ÅMTL��)T\PW]OP�\PQ[�[\]La�_QTT�KWV\QV]M�NWZ�an extended period of time, we are hopeful of presenting regular interim reports, beginning with an international symposium now being planned.

Those who are absolutely ineligible for relevant Clinical Trials are individually considered for IND Compassionate Use access to trial drugs. This is very limited, due to its high cost of organization and maintenance, but an extremely relevant part of our effort when it can be implemented on a case-by-case basis.
