Venerable José Gregorio Hernández

By Fr. Brad Morin

José Gregorio Hernández was born in 1864 and raised in a small

Venezuelan village where he lived with his parents and six siblings.

After high school, José Gregorio began medical

schooling at Universidad Central de Venezuela and

excelled at his studies.

He continued his schooling in Paris where he studied

bacteriology, microbiology, physiology, and other

fields of medicine. He finally returned to Venezuela

where he worked at a hospital and became a leading

doctor of medicine. He woke up at 5am every morn-

ing to pray and go to Mass, and spent his free time

serving the poor and tending to their medical needs.

Jose Gregorio deeply desired to be a monk, but after

spending time in a monastery, the austere way of life

debilitated his health and he was forced to return

home to heal. Back in Venezuela he joined a diocesan seminary, but

soon left for Rome so he could study theology and prepare to again

attempt entering a monastery. Once again, his health failed him and

he developed a disease that sent him home. After these two attempts

to enter religious life, Jose Gregorio spent the rest of his life as a

layperson using his talent as a doctor to serve the most needy in Ven-

ezuela. José Gregorio not only held several academic achievements

that granted him the respect of his fellows, but he was also a pioneer.

The physician was the first to introduce the use of the

microscope to the country, and he founded the first

bacteriology's university chair in Latin America. He

was among the 35 founders of the National Medicine

Academy of the country.

The doctor also put together teams for the laboratory

of Experimental Physiology in Caracas and gathered

several materials for brand new medical courses at the

Central University of Venezuela, where he taught.

He was known as “the doctor of the poor.” One day in 1919, while

bringing medicine to a sick elderly woman, Jose Gregorio was struck

by a car and died.

COLLECTIONS

Offertory at Daily Mass ǀ During COVID we began the practice

of taking an Offertory Collection at the Weekday Mass to allow

parishioners to continue to support the parish without having to

mail it to the office. Now that COVID restrictions are being re-

moved the weekday collection will be dropped as well, starting

on June 1. Thank you for your continued support.

Second Collection This Weekend ǀ Landscape and grounds. Support

the cost of improving our grounds after the long, harsh winter. Your

donations to this collection will help to offset costs to maintain and

beautify church grounds. The expenses include spring cleanups,

sweeping our parking lots, trimming trees and bushes, covering the

cost to mulch, etc.

Website: www.portlanddiocese/vocations; Facebook: VocationsME

Intercession ǀ That our young men and women may be like mus-

tard seeds, continually growing in faith to share the Gospel with

others, we pray to the Lord.

Perpetual Eucharistic Adoration Chapel ǀ The devotion of giving

time to spend before Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament has been a well

established tradition in Good Shepherd Parish. We are blessed to

have access to the Adoration Chapel at 27 Thornton Ave. in Saco.

The mask mandate has been lifted, but the chapel is currently open to

scheduled adorers only, at this time. We are appealing for more ador-

ers so that we can get back to perpetual adoration.

Thanks to hundreds of scheduled adorers, this chapel continues to

keep open its doors; but it needs a continuing amount of new adorers

to keep the chapel active. Seriously consider becoming a scheduled

adorer. Please consider committing to an hour with Christ present in

the Blessed Sacrament.

Below are the hours of greatest need:

*Wednesday 3am * Friday 2am * Saturday 3am, 9am

mation or if you are interested in becoming a scheduled adorer or a

donations in our Parish Database when you use Offertory Envelopes

assistance. Be advised: All Souls donations are nondeductible since

a Mass is given for those intentions.
