Krishna Arora, as Rotarian of the Day, opened the meeting with a short quote by Mahatma Gandhi. As the focus of today’s meeting was the Interact Student Exchange Program, Krishna introduced a video about the program so kindly made by our talented, Rick Clark. The video included a collage of video clips and photos taken while the students were in India. He then acknowledged the students, chaperones and parents who came to today’s meeting.

President, Bev Fritschner, kept the business part of the meeting short so there would be enough time for the program of the day.

Rich Papike shared his granddaughter was accepted at university. When told he did not look old enough to have a granddaughter going to college, he replied he started early!Alan Galgut thanked the Club for all of their support during a very difficult time. Brett Morey honored Alan saying he is part of the family.

Ron Kohl presented David Tansey with his “ruby” Paul Harris Pin.

The presentation got an early start with Bonnie Arora first providing a little background about the Interact Student Exchange and some of its behind-the-scenes logistics and giving thank you’s to our ISC and YSC for their financial and hand’s on support for the program. The first leg of the Exchange was in April, 2015, when our Rotary Club hosted 9 Interact Club students and 2 chaperones from New Delhi, India. The second leg of the Exchange took place last November, when 10 Interact students from San Diego area and Borrego Springs, along with 2 chaperones, left for 2 weeks in India. The students and

chaperones were here today to tell us about the program from their perspective.

The participating 10 Interact Club students were from Borrego Springs High School; Point Loma High School; Del Norte High School; and San Dieguito Academy. Marty Rosenstein said many high schools in the area were contacted about this program and he thanked those four for seeing the importance this program was to their students.

The chaperones were:Martha Deichler, Rotarian and Superintendent of Borrego Springs Unified School District; and Rachel Wann, teacher and Interact Club advisor at Borrego Springs High School.

While in India the students and chaperones were hosted by the Rotary Club of Delhi South Metropolitan under the outstanding leadership of Club President, GS Ahuja, who came to San Diego as a chaperone last April with the students from New Delhi.

Each of the students took their turn and spoke eloquently about an aspect of the trip that impacted them and ways this experience has changed their perspective on life.

One student spoke of being so moved by a visit to a village and hearing about how the absence of women’s designated toilets endangered the women’s safety in the fields. Now The Borrego Springs Interact Club has started a project to collect funds to build toilets, (which cost $500 each), for the Muslim women in the village. Jan Percival stood up with dollars to give for this project and soon several club members joined her.

To end the presentation, chaperone, Martha Deichler, told an inspirational and true story about the traffic in India and the words of wisdom given to her by her Indian driver. For the grand finale, the students presented their signature songs, “Magic Penny” and “This Land is Your Land” accompanied by Martha on the banjo.

The meeting closed with President Bev giving Martha Deichler a notebook and saying that a donation was being made to the Braille Institute in honor of today’s wonderful presentation.

A very special thanks to Bonnie & Krishna for helping Susan with the details on the wonderful program and presentations as she did not realize until the meeting ended that the designated Club Reporter was not in attendance.

It looks like one of those milestones is coming up for me if I live long enough for a couple

more months. I will celebrate my 50th year as a Priest this April 26, 2016. I was ordained a Priest at St. Mary of the Lake Seminary, now called the University of St. Mary of the Lake, Mundelein, Il.

I started my journey at Quigley Preparatory Seminary near downtown Chicago where about 500 other men were signing up to be Roman Catholic Priests. The building looked like it was built sometime in the middle ages with its Gothic design and feeling of old and forebod-ing, actually it was under 100 years old and built when one of the early Bishops of Chicago, Archbishop James Quigley thought it was time for Chicago to have its own Minor Seminary. Just a couple blocks away was the famous Wa-ter Tower landmark showing where the Chicago

fire and been stopped by brave men of the Chicago fire department. A couple more city blocks and you were at the year round ice cold fresh water of Lake Michigan! Those hallowed rooms were filled to the brim for over 50 years with young men hoping to become part of the freshman class of 1951, of those 500 men signing up as freshman only 90 would be still around come graduation time and move up the scholastic ladder to the Major Seminary. Yes, I was one of those 90.

To my Friends at the Greatest Rotary Club in the world!

Thank you for being part of this MOST DYNAMIC ROTARY CLUB IN THE WORLD.

YOUR ROTARY PRIEST FRIEND.
