STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION Shepherds and sheep were so much a part of life for Jesus and those from Galilee. Galilee was, after all, largely a rural area and raising sheep and sheepherding was an intricate part of their lives. That is why the image of a shepherd with his sheep was so often used during biblical times. It was a connection with which people could identify.

It is equally important for us today to understand this important cultural connection for them. Shepherding was all about feeding the lambs and the sheep (recall that Jesus tells Peter “Feed my sheep.”), bringing them to good pasture lands and water (“The Lord is my shepherd…He makes me lie down in green pastures; he leads me beside quiet waters; he restores my soul.”); going after lost lambs (“Does he not leave the ninety-nine in the open country and go after the lost sheep until he finds it?”); and protects the sheep in the field and the fold (“The watchman opens the gate, and the sheep listen to his voice.”).

Our Gospel reading today comes from St. John 10: 1-10. In St. John 10: 11, the next verse, Christ declares “I am the good shepherd; the good shepherd lays down his life for his sheep.” As Catholics and Christians, we, too, are called to be Good Shepherds to all those with whom we come in contact. It may be from another culture than ours, but we should understand full well the implications of that.

May is Mental Health Month Each year millions of Americans face the reality of living with a mental health condition. 1 in 4 Americans will be affected by a mental health condition. If things are getting too much for you and you feel you can’t cope, ask for help. Your family or friends may be able to offer practical help or a listening ear. Or come to the St. James Prayer and Support group. Fourth Thursday of the month at St. James’s Social room at 7PM.

“Christ has no body now but yours. No hands, no feet on earth but yours. Yours are the eyes through which he looks compassion on this world. Yours are the feet with which he walks to do good. Yours are the hands through which he blesses all the world. Yours are the hands, yours are the feet, yours are the eyes, you are his body. Christ has no body now on earth but yours.” St. Teresa of Ávila

We pray for Peace and Wholeness – for those with troubled minds and hearts, that broken lives and relationships might be mended. May we reach out to those who suffer with mental illness, Help us to know what to say. What to do. Fill our hearts with healing love, understanding, and empathy. Help them to lift up their burdens to God and together we can help each other. We are not alone. With a friend we can be still and know God is there with both of us.

St. James—St. Leo Catholic Community is under the pastoral care of the Eudist Fathers, or Congregation of Jesus and Mary. We owe our name to Saint John Eudes who founded the Congregation in France in 1643. The Eudists currently operate in 15 countries, most of which are in the developing world. Evangelization, mainly with the poor and the youth, is our primary purpose, as well as formation to ministry in the

training of diocesan priests and lay ministers. Our motto is “To Serve Christ and His Church.” For more information visit: http://www.eudistsusa.org

Welcome to St. James-St. Leo Catholic Community!

We warmly welcome all visitors and hope you will consider making our community your parish home. Church attendance does not make you or your family registered members.

Registration forms are in the brochure rack at the entrance of the church, online, or at the parish office.

Congratulations to the children who be receiving their First Communion this weekend!

First Communion is considered one of the holiest and most important occasions in a Roman Catholic person's life. A child's first communion is a cause for celebration. It is the first time that a person receives the Sacrament of the Holy Eucharist, which is the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ. Most Catholic children receive their First Communion when they're 7 or 8 years old, because this is considered the age of reason. For anyone to receive communion, that person must be considered to be without sin and in a state of grace.
