Designed to address the

“achievement gap”

This gap is apparent as early as 36

months

45 states have adopted the

common core

• Standards are simply expectations of what students are expected to know and at what age/level this mastery is expected to be achieved.

• Agree or disagree, you must be prepared to be trained by, to implement, and to be measured by its criterion.

• What does this means for ECE educators and why it is so important?

Nearly 90% of the brain’s growth happens before age 5

Experience is the key to high-quality learning

Innovation begins in our learning environments

Both licensed center- and family childcare programs are preparing children for all of their life-stages

Developmentally appropriate practice

• Practice is manifest in curriculum development and its implementation.

• It is better to think of assessments in terms of appraisals. Critical questions asked are purposed to measure the value of practice at achieving outcomes set by standards.

Let’s recap

11

Standards are meant to give a clear guideline as to what students are expected

to know and when

These expectations influence the what and how higher

education programs prepare aspiring teachers

Practices in the classroom are based on achieving

outcomes measured by these expectations

Assessment is an appraisal the value of practices at

achieving these outcomes

Critical questions effective self-assessments answer

• Does the instruction or practice achieve the expected outcome? Does it surpass it?

• Does the practice hinder or promote the student’s progression?

• Is the practice developmentally appropriate?

• Is this practice inclusive?

• Does it foster innovation and creativity in the students and the teacher?

• Is the entire concept a bust or can it be modified to achieve the respective goal?

• How is the instruction for this competency applicable in the real world?
