Animals can be grouped according to…..

those WITH backbones – VERTEBRATES

and those WITHOUT backbones - INVERTEBRATES



Mollusks

Echinoderms - spiny sea creatures like starfish & sea urchins.

Annelid Worms- segmented bodies like earthworms & leeches.

Flatworms

Arthropods- hard external skeletons & jointed limbs.

Coeleneterates- simple organism having 3 cellular layers. Jellyfish

Protozoa - microscopic single cell organisms.

Further groupings under each heading include….

INVERTEBRATES



Reptiles- dry skin & scales;- lay eggs;- breathe air.

Birds (Aves) - feathers;- two wings;- claws;- lay eggs.

Fish - have scales, fins & tails;- breathe underwater using gills.

VERTEBRATES

Amphibians- young live in water but adults live on land;- smooth wet, slimy skin;- lay eggs.

Mammals- Marsupials, Primates, Rodents, Marine & Flying



Today, we’ll be looking at…

Vertebrates - Mammals



There are about 4,000 kinds of mammals! All mammals…

have their bodies insulated with hair or fur.



All mammals produce milk and nurse their babies.



All mammals have lungs and need to breathe air.



All mammals… when grown eat a variety of foods.

Some mammals are….Carnivores, which means they like to eat meat.

Some mammals …. are Herbivores – those who eat plants.

And finally, some mammals…. are Omnivores. These are animals that eat both meat and plants. Most bears are ominvores.



Dogs are also Omnivores.



All mammals are warm blooded - Endothermic.

An Endotherm is an animal that maintains its body temperature at a relatively constant level. This means that it doesn’t matter what the temperature is outside, the bodies of mammals are designed to be the same temperature all the time.

A sheep is a Mammal & an Endotherm. It is the same temperature in the summer and the winter.

A turtle is a Reptile and is NOT an Endotherm. It’s body temperature is the same as its environment & needs sunlight to stay warm.



Remember, all mammals are vertebrates – animals with a spine.

Mammals are further divided into three categories –

Most Mammals are Placental.

This means that their babies grow inside the mother’s body.

Did you know….rabbits have lots of babies!

Monotremes MarsupialsPlacental



The gestation time (how long the doe is pregnant) is about 28 days.

The mother can get pregnant the same day she gives birth.

Litters can be as large as 14 kits (baby rabbits) – 7 is average.

A single rabbit may give birth to 92 kits per year.

Her babies will begin having babies with other rabbits.

One pair of rabbits can become over 1,000 rabbits in just one year!



Some Mammals are Monotremes. Although they produce milk for their babies, they actually lay eggs. Examples include the Duck-billed Platypus and the Echidna.

The third type of Mammal is the Marsupial.

They give birth to tiny, underdeveloped babies who climb up the mother’s fur to continue growing in a pouch on her belly. Koala bears and kangaroos are Marsupials.

Toronto Zoo Elephant

Yep ! An elephant is a large Mammal and part of the Elephantidae Family.



Nope! Penguins belong to the Aves (Bird) Class.Toronto Zoo Penquins



Toronto Zoo Pygmy Hippopotamus

Yes ! The Pygmy hippopotamus is a small hippopotamid and is a Mammal.



Toronto Zoo Arctic Wolf

Yep ! The Arctic Wolf is part of the Canidae family and is a Mammal.



Nope! This African Spurred Tortoise is a Reptile.



Nope! Flamingos are also part of the Aves (Birds) class.



Yes! Buffalo are mammals!



No! A bee is an small, air-breathing Anthropod.



Yes! People, of all sizes, – humans – are mammals too!
