After these things had been done, the leaders came to me and said, “The people of Israel, including the priests and the Levites,

1b カナン人、ヘテ人、ペリジ人、エブス人、アモン人、モアブ人、エジプト人、エモリ人などの、忌みきらうべき国々の民と縁を絶つことなく、have not kept themselves separate from the neighboring peoples with their detestable practices, like those of the Canaanites, Hittites, Perizzites, Jebusites, Ammonites, Moabites, Egyptians and Amorites.

LORD, the God of Israel, you are righteous! We are left this day as a remnant.

1 エズラが神の宮の前でひれ伏し、涙ながらに祈って告白しているとき、イスラエルのうちから男や女や子どもの大集団が彼のところに集まって来て、民は激しく涙を流して泣いた。While Ezra was praying and confessing, weeping and throwing himself down before the house of God, a large crowd of Israelites—men, women and children—gathered around him. They too wept bitterly.

2 そのとき、エラムの子孫のひとりエヒエルの子シェカヌヤが、エズラに答えて言った。「私たちは、私たちの神に対して不信の罪を犯し、この地の民である外国の女をめとりました。しかし、このことについては、イスラエルに、今なお望みがあります。 Then Shekaniah son of Jehiel, one of the descendants of Elam, said to Ezra, “We have been unfaithful to our God by marrying foreign women from the peoples around us. But in spite of this, there is still hope for Israel.

Let it be done according to the Law.

11 だから今、あなたがたの父祖の神、主に告白して、その御旨にかなったことをしなさい。この地の民と、外国の女から離れなさい。」Now honor the LORD, the God of your ancestors, and do his will. Separate yourselves from the peoples around you and from your foreign wives.”
