Rookie pitcher Ben Heinl started the game well holding the visiting Stealers to 1 run. We batted well in the first with hits to Gspot, Big Game Billy McColl (first pitch—unusual), Craig walked (thanks for coming early mate) , Pogo hit… hmmm memory vague now… anyway we scored 5 runs. After they scored a run in the second we made a change 1-2 2-1. Jimmy threw some nice pitches in the 2nd but we let him down in the field. In the 2nd scored one more. Think it was 5-6. Jimmy threw some great BP in the 3rd with many hits on the first pitch (very unusual). We had a chance to win the game in the 4th with bases loaded, the blue called time and game. We didn’t really deserve to win and for a change we didn’t. Special mention to Marcus for getting out of his sick bed to deliver the beers via a helicopter drop to the top of the dugout. At Flat Rock. Also for leaving strange computer generated messages. We only have 6 confirmed starters for next week… should be interesting check out this re-sult from this week: TH 18 WH 17

Wind, too few hits and too many errors lead to our first defeat of the season, against the

Red Bears, who on the other hand hit all day and fielded well.

Glass half full though, with a great triple by Spud in his first game back, 4 stolen bases from Dave with a further 2 to score on a crook throw to 2nd, 2 excellent catches

at Centre by Andreas, and a great infield foul fly caught by JT in row 3. Singles to JT, Doc and Dom off a

blooper hustling the throw from 1 to 3.

Enough said and we'll be back.

BEARS GO DOWN TO LEAGUE LEADERS

Coming up against the undefeated league leading 2006 Concord Comets U16A Grade side the North Sydney Bears Wrong Side of 30 D Grade side fought a losing battle on a day where a late cool change from a gusting warm wind warm didn’t provide any relief to the Bears pitchers. A tight first dig saw the Bears batters fall 1 - 2 – 3 on strikes to a Comets pitcher with heat and varia-tion. The Comets faired slightly better in their at bat but scored only once thanks to some tight pitching by Robertson and great outfielding by By. The Bears batting showed great patience in the sec-ond and third innings to pull some walks out of the Comets pitching but were unable to capitalize leav-ing 5 runners stranded over the two innings. The Comets hitters found form and started to pepper the outfield and the runs started to flow.

The fourth saw another scoreless innings to the Bears and more runs to the Comets how finally de-cided to stop stealing when they were 16 runs up. Forbes took over the pitching duties late in the fourth and was able to close out the innings and limit the Comets to a 17-0 score line after four innings. Looking to save some face in the fifth Holland and Marsden drove the ball through the in field to make easy singles. Robertson hit a 2 RBI Home Run and the scorers finally chalked up some runs to the Bears. A 17-3 scoreline reflected the gap between the two teams. With a long season to go there is sure to be plenty of improvement in the D2 Bears side as old hands hone their skills and rookie players develop theirs. The bar has been set and the Bears now know what is required in order to wrestle the trophy away from the Comets cabinet.

BEARS DOWN BUT NOT OUT The B1 Bears entered round 4 with two straight losses but were confident of squaring the ledger against a Tigers side also on a 1-2 win/loss ratio. While a road trip to George Kendall is never enjoyable, the trip home can at least be made bearable if you leave with a win. Unfortunately the Bears left with nothing but a 1-3 start to the season and concerns about a hibernating offense (scribe in-cluded - the only thing I brought to this contest was the beer). The game started positively enough for the Bears, scoring twice in the first. But the lead was short-lived as the Tigers signalled their intentions with the bat to push across 3 in reply. When Bromley 'stole' home in the third (the statisticians are still arguing about this one) the Bears had tied the game and KC led the side back onto the field to continue a pitching per-formance that had so far kept the Tigers to a mere purr. In fact it wasn't until the bottom of the fourth that our opponents raised it to a dull roar with an in the park 2 RBI home run. The Bears showed character to claw back to level terms cour-tesy of Big Red's 2-out, 2 RBI single to right field, and would have taken the lead had the Tigers' pitcher not somehow gloved Chris's returned serve up the middle. But in fading light, the Tigers' batters took back the lead and ultimately the game. As the team dispersed and the tumbleweeds rolled across George Kendall, KC elected to remain behind to drink from the MVP

mug wondering, no doubt like the rest of us, when the offense is going to light up what's been a cloudy start to the season. The task doesn't get any easier this week-end against a North Ryde RSL side that's sitting at the opposite end of the table, but while 3 consecutive losses can knock you out of the majors at this time of year, it's early days in the PCBL and a hibernating Bears outfit is hopefully on the brink of coming alive this sum-mer.

Letters to the Editor Your article on Bears jersey numbers was a bit off. Here's me, with 17 seasons at the Bears (aka Willoughby Wolves in bygone days), paid top dollar for shirt number 00, and not a men-tion. Expect a correction for next week's issue. Are you good for it? Laurie Nolan #00

We are good for it. How about a correction (see page 8) and an apology? You were actually on the list but it was not visible because the text box was a little small. Also massive confusion

about where you belong in the list. Should you be at the very start or at the very end?

Sorry mate, and thanks for the feedback. It gets lonely here. -Ed.

Hey Champs What a great weekend just passed. A blur really after watching those night games but what a great weekend for Bears and baseball - and the pubs and pizza shop too! We played so well again at Pioneer Park with both teams settling into a 6 all draw for better part of the game. We then had one of those innings where we let them get 7 in to be down 13 to 6 BUT we turned it around and got back 4 to only go down 13 to 10.

Everyone played so well - we had Paulie leading off the pitching and was on fire - which is probably how his body is still feeling today. Batted so strong and like

lightning between the bases. Magic to watch Cliff was solid again at 3rd base for us and in his batting. Again was just so nice to have you with us again. Solid Rock.

Kirsty was strong in defence and we just missed out on an out at home because of the umpires view from behind the bums of the pitchers. Kirsty played well again this week as usual. I played first this week - watch out Jason. Got a catch and missed out on the out at home although we know we got him. I hugged to opposition pitcher/tree when he was visiting my base which both he and our short stop kept reminding me of. Roger had a fantastic welcome to Effd

and played brilliantly at 2nd base. Got stronger with batting as his eyes came back and hit a whopper 2 base hit to start his celebration at second base. Great to have you back - We missed you. Adrian took a BRILLIANT ICE CREAM CONE CATCH in right field much to his and our surprise. You played so well and on the move all day hope your body is healing well. It was one of the most fan-tastic catches I have seen in a long time. Well done. Adrian also batted strong as did the whole team - again I am doing this from memory not the score book ok. Matt also had a great game in Centre filed taking a great catch and sending an absolute canon to Cliffy to get the out at 3. We remember it even if you don't. Great to see you in action and the new captain of the outfield.

Zan had a great game in the field again - super short stop also with canons firing to get the outs at first and elsewhere. Batted like there was no tomorrow and sliding like only she can. Well done Zanadu an-other great game. We were also blessed to have John and Scotty Dumay who both played so well and Matt who hit a home run as warm up for their G grade game. Thank you so much it was unreal to have base coaches yelling so positively and have you guys just part of it with us. We really are lucky. And lastly our Guru. Well where to start. Al took a blinder in left field to the ex-

citement of his fans - well alright me - and had a strong day on the mound when he came in to relive the pitching. Never stopped talking and encouraging. I have attached a few pics from the game - fun-niest which I did not get was Al pulling the chips and lollies out of his jacket when we got to our next venue. Was great to have so many of us go to watch the G grade games although I could not really tell you anything about their games except apparently they won both but WOW what great pizza and the beer went down a treat.

This week we are playing at Blackmore Oval at Balmain. We are already without Jason and Phil again Can you please check your diaries and

advise if you can play Also we will be heading out for team dinner in the next few weeks - venue is Crows Nest Beer cafe I will let you know when we have decided on a date. Hope all bodies are healing well. If anyone is interested there will be a pitching session at training this week for those of us in the lower grades so please let me know if you are interested and can make training this week. All in all Effd that was another fantastic game taking us another step closer to our wins. We have huge potential in this team and are getting closer. If nothing

else what a great bunch of people - I have not laughed so much as we do. Love ya work.

I had occasion to pass through the US last week and caught up with former player Bill D’Agostino and his wife Juliette, we at-tended a game at Yankee Stadium and took these photo’s of the three of us flying the Bears Flag in Champions Bar across the street during a 2 ½ hour rain delay. The second Photo is Juli-ette’s version of the Bear Growl….

Concord Clouted 17-14 Having been smacked around the park in the previous week, the G2 Bears were all fired up and raring to avoid another defeat. And so on a dark and stormy night, the Con-cord Comets crashed and burned. Someone came up with a brilliant game plan. “Let’s make sure we just win every innings”. Appar-ently if you do that, you have a good chance of winning the game. Some strong hitting soon saw three home for only one out and Crusher Chris Percival at the plate. A curve ball that had ‘please hit me’ written all over it was despatched into the RSL carpark. Seven home to the good guys and the compulsory end of the innings. Con- cord were there to play and came back strongly, scoring six. But hey, we were on the plan. The next innings saw only one home run, with Dangerous Dan Bergseng doing the honours this time, for a two run dinger. Not so many runs scored this time, but Nick Percival on the mound was throwing them really well, managing a few strike outs. Which is just as well, because anything hit to the infield ended up an error. Bottom of the third, two runs in front, why didn’t we think of this earlier? The third innings soon saw Crusher at the plate. The only difference this time was that there were only two runners on base. More damage in the carpark. With a change of battery, Francis Spencer at the plate and Thomas Lord on the mound brought two great pick off plays and what turned out to the last innings. Three runs in front, this is pure genius. As the wind and rained swirled around and the F Troop fan club bayed for blood, Crusher was again at the plate. This time he received the ultimate compliment – an intentional walk. The game was called shortly thereafter, with the Bears victorious. Batting won this game, the pitching is improving, one day we will start fielding right – then watch out!!
