Leading the pervasive adoption of grid computing for research and industry
GGF Community
2
Community Mission
Build an international community ofend-users, researchers,
vendors/developers and special interest groups who share common interests and
objectives around the adoption, development and use of Grid technology
3
The GGF Community1. End-Users (EU) from research, industry and
academia who use Grid technology for some end purpose, e.g. weather modeling, risk analysis, reservoir modeling, car crash simulation, etc.
2. Researchers, typically computer scientists, who actually research Grid technology itself, e.g. ways to manage data, manage infrastructure resources, manage applications, etc.
3. Vendors and developers who implement standards, architectures and reference models
4. Special Interest Groups (SIGs) may be any combination of EUs, Researchers or Vendors/Developers who have some unique yet common interest, e.g. major Grid projects around the world who want to achieve interoperability between each other, etc.
4
Overall Community Objectives
1. Education: Help end-users in research, industry and academia understand and use and understand Grid technology
2. Research: Provide a forum for international researchers to develop and discuss new ideas for Grid technology standardization
3. Requirements: Identify, prioritize and drive end-user requirements into the GGF standards process
4. Adoption: Make GGF standards valuable for vendors & developers to adopt and help them adopt the standards
5. Special Interest: Provide a forum for special interest groups to achieve their unique objectives, e.g. GIN
5

Proposed Community Structure
• VOC (Voice of the Community) AD*– Financial (chair)– Telco (chair)– Research (chair)– other
• VAF (Vendor Adoption Forum) AD*– Data (chair)– DRM (chair)– SOA (chair)– Virtualization (chair)– Infrastructure Management (chair)– other
• EAF (Enterprise Adoption Forum) AD*– CEO, CFO or general biz level (chair)– CTO, CIO or IT Architect (chair)– IT Sys Admin, Developer (chair)
• GRF (Grid Research Forum) AD*• SIG AD*
– GIN (chair)– SNIA (chair)
* Two ADs per area to ensure redundancy/coverage
9
EAF (Enterprise Adoption Forum)
• Consists of EUs1. CEO, CFO or general biz level (i.e. not technical)2. CTO, CIO or IT Architect3. IT Sys Admin, Developer
• Purpose:– Understand Grid technology impact and trends– Learn how to actually apply/use Grid technology
• This becomes “the Enterprise track” for GGFxx
10
GRF (Grid Research Forum)
• Consists of researchers, typically computer scientists, who actually research Grid technology itself
• Purpose:– Forum for researchers to meet and discuss ideas
around Grid technology– Develop prototypes– Introduce and “pitch” new ideas to Standards
function
11
VOC (Voice of the Community)
• Group(s) of EUs (or EU reps/mindset)• Understand Grid technology so it can be
applied to a model– Use Grid tech to impact biz– Make the biz case/argument for Grid tech
• Capture needs, wants and expectations in the form of Use Cases and Requirements (VOC doc)
• Work with Standards function to represent VOC in the standards development process
12
VAF (Vendor Adoption Forum)
• Group(s) of Vendors or developers• Understand Grid technology to fit a biz
model or to build a market• Identify issues and constraints that make it
feasible to adopt standards (VAF doc)• Work with Standards function to represent
issues and constraints in the standards development process
13
Community Timeline• GGF17:
– Get VOC and VAF started via BoFs
• GGF18:– Get EAF started as a BoF– Establish VOC and VAF as CGs– Get VOC and VAF subgroups started via BoFs
• GGF19:– One common session for VAF and VOC– Hold CG sessions for select groups from GGF18
BoFs– Hold BoF sessions for any new groups
14
Issues
• Who is the right audience to solicit• How to make the sessions more productive
– Translators
• How to solicit participation– Use competitive nature of enterprise
• How to drive and sustain long-term results/interest
• Tie to other events/actives outside GGF

Success Metrics• High member satisfaction (events and overall)• Year/year growth of end user membership, event
attendance and overall community• High ratings on event content• End-user success stories and references in terms of:
– being helped in understanding and use of Grid technology, – value of participating in GGF overall– value delivered by Grid technology
• Growth in number and size of VOC groups• Positive PR/AR on value of GGF to end-users and
vendors• Growth of VAF• High VAF member satisfaction (events and overall)• Vendor success stories and references (e.g. usability
tests of OGSA)
18
Overall Community Deliverables
• Provide content for GGF events– Help attendees understand and use Grid technology
• Build Voice-of-the-Community (VOC) groups across key verticals– Establish interaction mechanism with Standards function
to drive VOCs into the GGF standards process
• Establish Vendor Adoption Forum (VAF) to champion efforts to make GGF standards valuable for software suppliers & developers to adopt– Establish interaction mechanism with Standards function
to drive VAF results into the GGF standards process
