A computing system typically consisting of multiple processors working together with a lot of memory per processor, a lot of disk storage across the entire system that is capable of performing a large number of calculations in a short period of time on a large amount of data to achieve a single task.
Typical classes of problems include:
• Problems of Scale
• Simulation and Modeling
• Difficult or “Hard” Problems – Non-Deterministic (NP)
– Adaptive Systems; Artificial and Natural
What is Supercomputing?

The “Big Idea” – RMSC - State of Montana Vision
To establish Montana as a recognized leader in the execution of a next-generation high performance computing business model as a fundamental component of Montana’s economic engine.
This vision will be realized by: Crossing a critical cyberinfrastructure threshold Becoming first in the nation for a “demand” based
HPC business model leveraging economies of scale Achieving “on-demand” computing capabilities Focusing upon the investment in human capital as
the critical component of the computing vision.
